In all the fun of planning a trip or even just dreaming of your next adventure, the process of renewing your passport is not the most exciting step. Now, you can skip the printing and mailing and renew right from your computer! Unfortunately this is not available to everyone, so before you get started, here are a few of the limitations:
- You must be at least 25 years old with a passport that is/was valid for 10 years
- Your passport was issued between 2009-2015 or 9 to 15 years from the new application date
- You must have your current passport in your possession
- There are no changes to your name, gender, date of birth, or place of birth
- You must have a digital photo to upload
- You are not traveling for at least 8 weeks from the date you will submit your application. Your current passport will be canceled when you subit the application
- You live in the United States (or a U.S. territory) and are applying for a tourism passport
Unfortunately, applying to renew online will not speed up the process of receiving your new one. Right now, processing times are approximately 6 to 8 weeks, so make sure you apply within plenty of time before your trip! The cost to renew online is also still the same as a standard application.
