Here's a sentence I never expected to say out loud: "Kevin and Monique are bringing our luggage home tomorrow."
But there we were just arriving back on American soil, standing in an airport with a missed connection behind us and two very different plans forming in real time. Half our group, including my mom Tammy, Dena, and Lisa, were already hunting for seats on the next available flight out. Kevin and Monique looked at each other, shrugged in that calm, we've-done-harder-things way, and said they'd grab a hotel and wait for their original airline.
Both plans worked. Neither group panicked. And the whole thing became one of the better stories to come out of the trip.
Before we move on to the missed flight in Slovenia, here’s one more thing you don’t want to miss as we wrap up the year, a quick planning reminder. November 30 will be our final day to accept new trip planning requests until January 4. We'll be using this time to finalize upcoming journeys and prepare back office procedures for another exciting year of travel.
Now, here’s our Slovenian (miss) adventure!
When The Plan Changes Mid-Trip
We had an incredible run in Slovenia. Lake Bled at sunrise. Wine that tasted like it had a personal vendetta against the rest of the world's wine. The kind of slow dinners where nobody checks their phone. Then a late connection put us in a situation every traveler eventually faces: the flight was gone, and decisions had to be made fast.
The rebookers, let’s call us Team A, got on another carrier and made it home the next day. The luggage, however, did not share our urgency. Every bag for the entire group missed the connection and was sitting somewhere between Ljubljana and home.
Team B, Kevin and Monique, waited it out with their original airline, landed the following day right on schedule, and picked up every last bag at baggage claim. Then drove them to everyone's door on the way home.
Tell me that's not a plot twist with a perfect ending.
A Missed Flight Is Not a Ruined Trip
Here's what I want you to take from this: a missed flight is an inconvenience with solutions, and knowing those solutions in advance is the difference between a stressful three hours and a manageable one.
A few things that actually help:
-Know your options before you need them. When a connection breaks, you generally have two paths: rebook immediately through another carrier, or wait for the original airline to reroute you. Both have trade-offs. Rebooking gets you home faster but may cost more and often leaves checked bags behind. Waiting costs time but keeps your itinerary more intact. Neither is wrong. Both worked for us.
-Stay calm at the counter. The gate agents are your fastest resource. Politely and quickly ask about the next available flight, whether the airline will cover a hotel if the delay is on their end, and the status of your bags. Knowing what questions to ask cuts the process in half.
-Don't chase your bags at the airport. If they missed the connection, they're already logged in the system. File the claim, give a delivery address, and move on. Most bags arrive within 24 to 48 hours. Ours just happened to arrive via Kevin and Monique, which was a more personal touch than most airlines offer.
This Is Exactly What Travel Insurance Is For
Most travelers think about insurance in terms of worst-case scenarios: medical emergencies, major cancellations, severe weather. But trip interruption coverage exists for moments like this one too. Missed connections, unplanned hotel stays due to delays, rebooking fees, compensation for checked bags that arrive late. These are real, covered costs that you should not be paying out of pocket.
The math is straightforward. A single unplanned hotel night in Europe, last-minute rebooking fees, and the meals in between add up fast. A solid travel insurance policy costs a fraction of that and covers far more than most people realize until they actually need it.
We always recommend our clients travel insured. Not as a formality, but because things happen even on perfectly planned trips, and the right policy turns a disruption into a minor inconvenience rather than an expensive one.
The Part No Algorithm Can Replicate
Part of what made Slovenia manageable was that no one was navigating it alone. When you travel with VIP, you have someone who knows what to do when the plan changes, because the plan always has the possibility of changing. We handled the logistics, stayed in communication, and made sure both groups had what they needed before the night was over.
