We just returned from Africa, and I'm still carrying it with me, that particular warmth that only comes from traveling with people you truly love.
I've been home for a few days now, unpacking, sorting through photos, replaying moments that still feel vivid and close. And what keeps surfacing isn't the landscapes, as breathtaking as they were. It's the faces. The laughter erupting around a dinner table over something that probably wouldn't be funny anywhere else. The look someone gets when they see something so beautiful it temporarily steals their words. The conversations that only happen when you're far from home and the noise of ordinary life has finally, mercifully, gone quiet.
There is something about shared travel that deepens a relationship in a way that very little else replicates. You see each other differently out there. You become a little more yourselves. You find out who your people really are when the itinerary goes sideways, when the sunset is better than anything you planned, when someone orders the wrong thing at dinner and it turns out to be the best meal of the trip. The memories you build together carry a texture that solo memories simply don't, and they tend to last longer, too. I have clients who took a friends' trip with us five years ago and still reference specific moments from it like they happened last week.
That is what travel does when you do it with the right people.
Which brings me to France. As Southern Suitcases prepares for our summer 2027 France journey, I find myself asking a question I want to pass along to you: who would you want beside you for something like this?
Southern Suitcases, good people, and France on the horizon — life is good.

Who is your travel tribe? Close your eyes for just a moment and think about your dream travel group. Not the logistics, not the dates, not who has the most vacation days — just the people. Who are the ones that make every experience richer simply by being present? The ones who linger at the dinner table, who wander curiously down every side street, who find humor in the unexpected detour and wonder in the ordinary moment? The ones who, when you look back at the photos years from now, make you smile before you even remember where you were? I think about my own people constantly when I'm planning these journeys, because I have learned that the destination is only half the story. The other half is always who you bring with you. Think about it honestly. Your college roommate you haven't traveled with in twenty years. Your sister who keeps saying "one day." Your closest couples, the ones who make every dinner run two hours longer than planned because no one wants the night to end. The friends who make you laugh until it hurts and somehow also make every glass of wine taste better just by being in the same room. France has a way of drawing out the best in people, and the best in the people they're with. Now picture this group, your group, moving through this itinerary together. |

You begin in the Loire Valley, where the French Renaissance left its most elegant fingerprints on the landscape. Châteaux rising above river bends, formal gardens stretching toward the treeline, wine cellars carved into the soft tufa cliffs. This is France at its most storybook, and it is a genuinely lovely place to ease into a journey together. |
|
From there, the mood shifts as you reach Normandy. The weight of history here is not something you read about and then move past. It settles into you, standing on those beaches, looking out at the grey-green Channel, understanding in a new and personal way what was given in that place. It is one of those rare destinations that changes a group. You leave it a little more bonded than when you arrived. |
Then Paris, in all her layered, unhurried glory. The cafés where the coffee is strong and no one rushes you. The golden light falling across the Seine at dusk. Notre-Dame, now beautifully restored and more luminous than before, her towers rising against a sky that always seems made for her. Paris is the kind of city that feels both electric and deeply intimate, and experiencing her with people you love makes her even more so.

A morning at Versailles follows, where the Hall of Mirrors stretches on seemingly forever and the gardens were designed to make you feel, even briefly, like time has slowed to accommodate you. You will catch your travel companion's eye somewhere in the middle of all that grandeur and just smile, because some experiences are simply better witnessed together. |
|
South through Avignon, city of medieval popes and sun-warmed stone, where the Rhône bends and the pace of life shifts into something slower and more generous. The Palais des Papes looms magnificent over the old city, and the outdoor markets smell of lavender, fresh herbs, and warm bread in a way that makes you want to stay forever. |
|
Then the moment everyone photographs and no photograph ever fully captures: Mont Saint-Michel at goldenhour, its ancient abbey rising from the tidal flats like something from a dream, so otherworldly that you will reach for your camera, take the shot, and then put it down, because some things deserve to simply be witnessed with your own eyes, in your own time, beside the people you came with. |

And finally, Lourdes, nestled in the foothills of the Pyrenees, where millions of pilgrims arrive each year from every corner of the world and find something quietly, profoundly their own. Standing at the Grotto of Massabielle, candles burning, the soft sound of the water, the particular stillness of that place, it settles into you. Long after you've come home, it stays.
This is not a highlight reel. This is France at depth, with room to breathe, room to wander, room to truly be present alongside the people who matter most to you. That combination is rare and worth protecting.
