The Best Way to Breeze Through Airport Lines

airport customs

When you're excited to head off on your next adventure or maybe eager to flop into your own bed after a trip, the last thing you want to do is stand in a long security or customs line. There are a few different options to help you breeze through, but which one is best? Each one offers perks, but if you travel internationally, some options are better than others. Let's break down a few of them!

What is TSA PreCheck?

TSA PreCheck is a government-run program that allows travelers to go through a less rigorous security checkpoint. Pre-approved TSA PreCheck travelers do not have to take off their shoes at security checkpoints or remove their liquids or laptops from their bags. A five-year membership costs $78 and TSA PreCheck is available at more than 200 airports. You'll start by filling out an application online, then visit an enrollment center for your background check and fingerprinting. If you only fly domestically, this may be the only trusted traveler program you need, but if you plan to fly out of the country, Global Entry would be a better option.

Benefits of Global Entry

Global Entry is another government-run trusted traveler program. If approved, you the perks of TSA PreCheck are included but with added benefits. After an international flight, Americans are often greeted with what seems like an endless line at Customs. Global Entry lets you skip right through by using either your passport or facial recognition at one of its kiosks. At just $22 more than TSA PreCheck ($100 every five years), it provides a lot more benefit to anyone planning to travel outside the U.S. (even if its only one or two times). The process to apply also starts online and is followed by an in-person interview and background check as well as biometric screening (for the facial recognition kiosks). Right now, Global Entry is only available at less than 80 airports but does include the major international airports.

What about Mobile Passport?

Mobile Passport Control (MPC) is for travelers who want to streamline the Customs process, but you'll still need to wait in line. MPC is a secure mobile app where travelers can upload their passport and declaration information. This can cut down on how long it takes to inspect your passport and documents once you make it through the customs line. Some airports will have designated lines for travelers with the MPC app, which will save you some time in line. MPC does not require any pre-approval and it is free to use, but it is not accepted at every airport right now.
