What is the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS)?
The travel authorization system is a way for countries to screen for migration and security risks. It is NOT a visa, and therefore does not require travelers to go through any of the typical visa requirements like visiting a consulate. Anyone between the ages of 18 and 70 traveling to most areas of the EU will need to fill out the online application. It is expected to cost 7 Euro and will take about 10 minutes. Most people should get their approval within minutes.

What kind of information will I need to provide? The application will ask for your personal information like name, birthday, address, and nationality. You'll also be asked to provide details about your level of education, occupation, and where/when you plan to travel. Your authorization will be linked to your passport, so you will need to provide your passport information when you apply as well.

Will I need to do this every time I travel to Europe?

Thankfully, no. The approvals will be good for three years. You will need to get a new authorization if your passport expires within those three years or you get a new passport though.

When will the new system take effect?

 

That is a great question. The EU has been talking about implementing the system for years. Most recently, it was announced it would begin some time in 2024, but no firm start date has been set. There will also be a transition period when it does take effect. If you have plans to travel to Europe next year, don't worry!
