Just Back from New Zealand–You’ve Got to Go!

There's a moment in every trip when you stop running through your mental checklist and just... land. For me, it happened somewhere between a morning ferry to Waiheke Island and a glass of Tantalus rosé overlooking the Hauraki Gulf sparkling behind it. That's when New Zealand stopped being a destination on my radar and became something I'll be recommending for the rest of my career.

I just wrapped an immersive week traveling from Auckland through Rotorua with our incredible local partners, who built an itinerary I could not have dreamed up on my own. First visiting a hobbit village I've had on my list since the credits rolled on Fellowship of the Ring. Continuing with days that began with geothermal spa rituals and ended with Māori cultural ceremonies and crème brûlée cocktails at midnight. Caves lit from the inside by thousands of glowworms, which sound made-up until you're standing underneath them with your jaw on the floor.

Twelve years into this career, I still occasionally have to remind myself this is real life. New Zealand made that especially hard to believe.

Here's the thing about this job that I don't take lightly: every recommendation I make carries my name on it. Your vacation, your money, your limited time off. I don't throw out destination suggestions based on a glossy brochure. I go. I inspect each room, I try all the delicacies, and I sit with the guides to connect and learn how they work. I build the relationships that later become the reason your trip feels effortless rather than accidental. This trip deepened every one of those connections, and it genuinely filled my cup in ways I didn't know I needed.

Take it from me, New Zealand belongs on your list. And, if it’s already on your list, move it to the top!

Auckland: The city that earns its confidence

We landed at 8am, running on no sleep and high expectations. The InterContinental Auckland had our rooms ready immediately, which, after 20-plus hours of travel, felt like an act of genuine grace. Then my shampoo exploded on everything in my suitcase. The team was at my door within minutes, laundry in hand. That's not a small detail. That's the difference between a hotel that's good on paper and one that earns your loyalty.

Auckland itself is walkable, spotless, and remarkably easygoing for a city its size. We spent the day doing exactly what I'd send clients to do: the All Blacks Experience, which pulls you into New Zealand rugby culture through storytelling and immersive energy you feel even if you've never watched a match in your life, and then ended our day enjoying champagne and caviar on the rooftop of our hotel overlooking the marina. The perfect way to end an amazing first day.

Waiheke Island: Easy elegance, ten minutes from the skyline

The morning ferry from Auckland takes about 35 minutes, and somewhere in the middle of that crossing, the city quietly disappears behind you. By the time Waiheke comes into view, rolling vineyards above the waterline, olive groves threading through the hills, hidden beaches tucked between rocky headlands, you understand why people come for a day and start quietly searching for property listings.

Our private guide Jo set the pace perfectly. We started with olive oil tasting at Allpress, moved through a two-course lunch and wine tasting at Tantalus, and ended the afternoon at Mudbrick with views that made the wine taste better than it probably needed to. This is Waiheke's particular gift: the day unfolds without urgency. No itinerary anxiety, no rushing. Just flavor and scenery in easy rotation.

The road south: glowworms, sheep, and a certain hobbit village

The drive from Auckland to Rotorua is about 140 miles through countryside that gets increasingly green, increasingly quiet, and increasingly convinced that cows and sheep hold the majority vote on land use. We made a stop in Waitomo first, descending into dark caves where thousands of glowworms stud the cave ceiling like a galaxy that decided to set up indoors. It's one of those things that photographs cannot prepare you for.

Then: Hobbiton. I've had this one on the list for years, and I'll just say it delivered without reservation. Walking through these little hobbit houses felt genuinely surreal in the best possible way. Bucket list, checked.

Rotorua: Where the earth still has opinions

We based ourselves at the Regent of Rotorua, perfectly positioned near our activities and Eat Street, which became our unofficial base of operations for the evenings. Our first night included dinner at Atticus Finch, a restaurant built entirely around the world of To Kill a Mockingbird, themed cocktails included. We closed the evening at Cocktail Library and Dessert Bar, where I encountered what may be my new benchmark cocktail: a crème brûlée and vodka creation I will absolutely attempt to recreate at home and almost certainly ruin.

The days that followed were genuinely hard to top. We started with a restorative morning at Wai Ariki Hot Springs and Spa, which set exactly the right tone before an afternoon touring the stunning lakefront villas at On The Point, a property with African-inspired design and views over Lake Rotorua that stop you mid-sentence. That evening, we watched the Lady Knox Geyser erupt at Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland, a geothermal landscape that looks like it was designed by someone who had never seen rules about what colors the earth is supposed to be.

Later we ventured over to Huka Lodge in Taupo, a historic riverside retreat on the Waikato River that once hosted Queen Elizabeth and still carries that kind of quiet distinction. And then, in what can only be described as a complete tonal pivot, we rolled down Mount Ngongotaha inside a giant inflatable ball filled with water at ZORB Rotorua. One of the more unhinged things I've done in twelve years of this work. No notes. Unlimited laughter.

The evening that capped off our North Island experience was the one I'll carry the longest. Te Pa Tu welcomed us into a Tū Te Ihi celebration, a Māori winter harvest experience tied to the lunar calendar, filled with storytelling, song, and a kind of intentional warmth that doesn't translate into bullet points. The Māori people there didn't just welcome us. They made us feel like we belonged. I left that evening feeling genuinely moved by their culture.

Kaikōura: Where the coast meets white-capped mountains

There are places that look like they were designed to make you question what's real, and Kaikōura is one of them. The Seaward Kaikōura Range rises sharply from the coastline with a kind of drama that doesn't feel proportionate, jagged snow-capped peaks descending almost directly into the Pacific. The town sits in that narrow strip of land at the base, unhurried and completely aware it doesn't need to try harder than its geography already does.

We watched sperm whales surface just offshore, enormous and completely unbothered by our presence. Fur seals lounged on the rocks below the coastal path like they owned the real estate, which, by any reasonable measure, they do. And the fresh crayfish here is the kind of thing that makes you reconsider every meal you've eaten in your life up to this point.

It's a short stop on the map and an outsized memory. Put it on the itinerary.

Lindis: A wilderness retreat surrounded by silence

I've stayed in a lot of places. The Lindis is different.

Tucked into the Ahuriri Valley in New Zealand's high country, this is the kind of property that earns the word remote without using it as an apology. The tussock-covered hills roll in every direction, the nearest noise is the wind, and the night sky delivers exactly what you'd expect when there's nothing between you and the Milky Way but altitude and clear air.

The lodge itself sits lightly on the landscape, which is the right instinct here. Floor-to-ceiling glass frames views that shift all day as the light moves across the valley. It's the kind of place where you arrive planning to read and end up just sitting, watching the hills do their thing. For clients who want luxury without the performance of luxury, this is the answer.

One night here recalibrates you in a way that's genuinely hard to explain and easy to feel.

Queenstown: The thrill-seeker's paradise

Let's be clear about something: Queenstown doesn't ease you in. It opens with Lake Wakatipu framed by the Remarkables mountain range and then immediately starts offering you ways to throw yourself off things. Bungee jumping, jet boating, canyon swings, skydiving. The adventure infrastructure here is organized, world-class, and completely committed to the premise that adrenaline is its own form of wellness.

But here's what I'd tell clients who think Queenstown isn't for them: the thrill-seeking is optional. The scenery is not. The Skyline Gondola carries you above the town for views that belong on a different planet entirely. The restaurants along the waterfront hold their own against anything I've eaten in cities twice the size. And the Central Otago Pinot Noir coming out of the surrounding region is genuinely special, the kind of wine that makes you want to understand more about the soil it came from.

Queenstown is also the logical base for a Milford Sound day trip, which is a separate category of jaw-dropping and belongs on your list regardless of how you feel about fjords, because Milford will change your position on fjords.

Whether you're here for the jump or the glass of Pinot on the terrace watching the sun set behind the mountains, Queenstown delivers. The only wrong choice is skipping it.
